The scenic limited express from Shinjuku β ~85 min, comfortable reserved seats (Hakone 3, Car 6). Grab a coffee, watch the city give way to mountains. At Hakone-Yumoto you switch to the Hakone Tozan mountain railway for the loop, all covered by the Free Pass.
A hillside sculpture park β Henry Moore and Picasso (its own Picasso pavilion), set against the mountains. Easy to wander, room for everyone's pace, and a soft, cultured start to the loop. On the Tozan railway line up from Yumoto.
James's soba stop β a riverside soba house going since 1934, famous for seiro soba bound with grated yam instead of water (~Β₯1,300). A calm, proper handmade-soba break. At Hakone-Yumoto, so easy on the way up or back.
Up by cable car and ropeway to the steaming sulphur vents of Owakudani. Try a kuro-tamago (black egg, cooked in the hot springs β said to add seven years to your life). Big views on a clear day; the ropeway is part of the loop.
Down to Lake Ashi for the sightseeing cruise (the famous "pirate ship"), with Mt Fuji framed behind the Hakone Shrine torii on a clear day. The scenic payoff of the loop before heading back down toward the onsen.
A 70-year-old Hakone confectioner famous for yumochi β a pillowy egg-white mochi with chopped yokan inside. The Japanese half of the two-country mochi plan (Insadong tteok was the Korean half). Try it with matcha in the tea room, or grab a box. ~5 min on foot from Hakone-Yumoto Station.
Two private open-air bath rooms β one for Lister & Lisette, one for James (~Β₯6,000/room, 2h, amenities included). Private rooms keep it relaxed and sidestep tattoo rules. Free 3-min shuttle from Hakone-Yumoto. In at 16:00, out for the 18:45 Romancecar.
